ACW | October 24, 2026 — Pope Leo XIV has accepted the honorary title of Papal Confrater of the College of St George at St George's Chapel, Windsor, the British Royal Household announced on Friday, October 23, 2026.

According to the Royal Household, the Dean and Canons of Windsor extended the invitation with the approval of King Charles III and the support of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The announcement calls the title "a visible sign of spiritual fellowship, ecumenical friendship and Christian fraternity."

St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle is the church of the British royal family, and the monarch is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The Anglican Communion News Service (ACNS) and the German Catholic news agency KNA report that the Royal Household described this as the first exchange of such religious titles in half a millennium.

The announcement says a chair for the Pope will be unveiled at St George's Chapel "in due course." Later this autumn, the King will attend the dedication of a mosaic icon of the Christ of Cefalù, a gift from Pope Leo, in the chapel.

Background: The announcement marks the anniversary of the King and Queen's State Visit to the Holy See on October 23, 2025, when King Charles became Royal Confrater of the Papal Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls in Rome. According to KNA, the Church of England broke with Rome in 1534 after Henry VIII's dispute with the Pope. ACW earlier reported that the Angelicum gave Patriarch Bartholomew an honorary doctorate.

Why it matters: The Catholic Church and the Church of England have been divided for nearly five centuries. The Royal Household presents the title as a sign of progress between the two churches and a step toward Christian unity.

ACW will continue to follow this story.
