ACW | November 6, 2026 — A Myanmar military air and drone attack on a Bible school in Karen State killed three female students on Tuesday, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) and the Karen Information Center said.
The attack took place on November 3 in Hpapun (Mutraw) District, an area administered by the Karen National Union (KNU). CSW reported it in a statement on November 5.
At about 3 p.m., when there was no active fighting in the area, military jets dropped more than 10 bombs, CSW said. Armed drones then bombarded the area for about an hour, and one drone detonated directly over the school.
Two female students were killed instantly. Two critically injured students were taken across the Salween River to Thailand on November 4, and one of them died on the way to hospital, according to CSW.
The Karen Information Center put the number of wounded at six. CSW's statement gives six in one place and seven in another.
"The initial strike was carried out by a fighter jet, which dropped at least 10 bombs," P'doh Saw Hto Robin, spokesperson for the KNU's Mutraw District administration, told the Karen Information Center. He said a drone then struck and exploded at the Bible school, causing deaths and injuries.
"CSW is outraged and appalled by the junta's deliberate attack on a Christian Bible school in Hpapun District," said Scot Bower, the group's chief executive. He urged the international community to take "swift, coordinated action," enforce an aviation fuel embargo on the military and hold the regime to account. No response from Myanmar's military appeared in published reports.
Background: Since May 2026, the military has carried out air strikes, artillery shelling and village burnings in Hpapun District, CSW said. On October 25, a military jet dropped four bombs on a village along the Salween River, killing a child and wounding at least two people, the group said.
Why it matters: According to CSW, the strike hit a Christian educational institution at a time when no fighting was taking place nearby. The group sees it as part of a sustained military campaign in Karen State and has called for the commanders responsible to be held accountable.
