ACW | October 23, 2026 — Police in Jharkhand, eastern India, have formed an eight-member special investigation team to identify and arrest the people who attacked a Catholic priest and principal of a Christian school, ETV Bharat reported.
According to AsiaNews and the Press Trust of India (PTI), the priest was injured by unknown assailants on the school premises on the night of Tuesday, October 20. He was found unconscious and bleeding the next morning, October 21.
He was first taken to a local hospital and then to a hospital in Ranchi, the state capital. ETV Bharat reported on October 23 that, according to doctors, his condition has improved and he is out of danger.
The motive is still unclear. According to AsiaNews, the local bishop said three or four people had apparently entered the school office to steal. Reports differ on the weapon used, and police have not yet confirmed it officially.
According to PTI, the district police chief said officers were examining CCTV footage and other evidence. No arrest has been officially confirmed so far.
ETV Bharat reported that Christians and local residents are holding a silent march today, Friday, October 23, to protest the attack and demand justice. Hundreds of tribal and Christian community members also protested on October 21.
Background: According to PTI, the priest has led the school since 2009. AsiaNews reported that the local church urged people not to spread rumours and to wait for the police investigation.
Why it matters: An attack on a religious leader and head of a Christian school, even with the motive still unclear, raises questions about the safety of the Christian community and church-run schools in Jharkhand; the police investigation is expected to show whether the attack was linked to his faith.
ACW will continue to follow this story.
