Jordan arrests three suspects over deadly Karak church attack
Jordanian security forces wounded and arrested three men accused of the deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Karak after a dawn shootout on Monday; the death toll has risen to nine.
Christian World | ACW | 26 October 2026 — Jordanian security forces wounded and arrested three men accused of the deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Karak governorate after an exchange of fire at dawn on Monday, 26 October 2026.
According to the Associated Press and The National, citing Jordan's Public Security Directorate, the three men were hiding in an abandoned house in Karak. They refused to surrender and opened fire on security forces. All three were wounded and arrested, and no security personnel were hurt. Officials said firearms and ammunition were seized.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya said the security services had "fulfilled their duties," leading to "the capture of those who carried out this terrorist act." He said the suspects "put up fierce resistance against the security forces" before being subdued.
The attack took place on Friday, 23 October, during a funeral at a church in the village of Hamoud in Karak governorate. Both outlets now put the death toll at nine. The National reports 40 people injured, while the AP reports more than two dozen. ACW earlier reported seven dead, citing Jordan's health minister.
No group has claimed responsibility, and officials have not announced a motive or any link between the suspects and a militant group. King Abdullah II ordered authorities to respond with "an iron fist" against what he called "outlaws of Islam". Hundreds attended a funeral service at the church on Sunday, 25 October, for eight of the victims.
Why it matters: Karak is home to one of Jordan's most important Christian communities, and attacks of this kind are rare in the country. The arrests are a first step towards establishing the motive and holding those responsible for an attack on a Christian congregation to account.
