ACW | October 30, 2026 — Morning Star News reported on Friday, October 30, that a mob of about 150 people in a village in India's Chhattisgarh state attacked three related Christian families; one family plans to leave rather than renounce Christ.
The outlet, citing sources, says the attack took place on September 21. It reports that attackers beat women, children, men and elderly people and vandalized homes; four people needed hospital treatment.
According to Morning Star, villagers had disrupted the families' worship from September 6 and summoned them several times before the village council. The families were also barred from subsidized government rations, sources said.
Morning Star says police, according to the family, did not come at first despite a station nearby, and arrived after the family contacted a senior district police officer. It reports that police took no action on the complaint and that village elders contradicted the family's account. The outlet does not include an independent response from Indian authorities.
After the attack, the families' belongings were thrown on the road and they were told to leave, sources said. Two families agreed under pressure to convert to Hinduism; one refused and plans to move to a city.
This report has not yet been confirmed by other sources.
Background: Morning Star describes the pressure as part of "ghar wapsi" (reconversion to Hinduism) campaigns by Hindu nationalist groups and notes India ranks 12th on Open Doors' 2026 World Watch List.
Why it matters: According to Morning Star, if the sources' account is accurate, pressure to renounce faith ended in one Christian family losing its ancestral home; the outlet bases its account on the family and its own sources.
ACW will continue to follow this story.
