ACW | November 3, 2026 — Bishop Georg Bätzing of Limburg, Germany, called Pope Leo XIV's description of sexual abuse in the Church "inadequate" in a column posted on his diocese's website on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

Asked at an in-flight press conference from Metz, France, to Rome on September 28 whether abuse in the Church is systemic, the Pope said: "Sexual abuse is first and foremost a human problem."

Several of the victims he had met spoke about systemic abuse, but "personally, I prefer to express it in a different way," Leo said, according to the Vatican transcript. He added that some organizations within the Church had "at times, if you will, as a system, been abusive."

"The systemic causes of sexualized violence in the Catholic Church are scientifically documented," Bätzing wrote. Playing down or denying them "would be a serious setback," he said.

He called the Pope's framing "inadequate and, in its potential consequences, highly problematic," and urged Church leaders to adopt binding accountability, transparent decision-making and effective, as far as possible independent, oversight. No response from the Vatican appeared in published reports.

Background: Bätzing cited the 2018 MHG study commissioned by the German bishops. According to Crux, the study found that structural factors such as clericalism and unequal power increased the risk of abuse. ACW earlier reported that a Polish court convicted the bishop of Tarnów of failing to report abuse.

Why it matters: Bätzing said recognizing systemic causes "is not unique to the Church's debate in Germany" and asked the Pope for an "equally clear recognition" of them, Crux reported; in September, after meeting seven survivors in France, Leo said the Church has "a particular responsibility" to walk with victims as they seek healing.

ACW will continue to follow this story.
