Christian World | Cardinal Tagle led an Oct. 31 Mass for the 450th anniversary of the Diocese of Macau, as Asian bishops backed training for 'digital missionaries' in the Church
ACW | November 2, 2026 — Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle presided on Saturday, October 31, 2026, over a Mass at the Forum de Macau marking 450 years since the founding of the Diocese of Macau, LiCAS News reported.
Tagle is pro-prefect of the Vatican's Dicastery for Evangelization and dean of the College of Cardinals. He urged the Church not to rest on past achievements and to find new ways to reach younger generations, LiCAS News said.
Pope Gregory XIII founded the diocese in 1576, and LiCAS describes it as the first modern diocese in Asia. The anniversary theme is "From Macau to the World." Vatican News republished the report on Monday.
The social communication office of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences met in Macau from October 27 to 31 to discuss artificial intelligence in evangelization. Its final statement urges bishops' conferences to develop local AI policy safeguards and announces a regional committee to train "digital missionaries," according to LiCAS.
The statement says no technology can replace human encounter, prayer or the sacramental life of the parish.
Background: Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-sang of Macau wrote in a pastoral letter dated January 6, 2026, that the jubilee runs from January 23, 2026, to January 23, 2027, with a grand celebration and Mass on October 31 as its high point. The Dicastery for Evangelization, led by Tagle, earlier announced its theme for World Mission Day 2027.
Why it matters: In the same letter, the bishop wrote that Macau became "a hub for evangelization in the Far East" after 1576. Asian churches are now turning to digital media to reach young people, LiCAS reported.
ACW will continue to follow this story.
