ACW | October 29, 2026 — Pope Leo XIV said at his weekly general audience on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, that the incarnation is the primary foundation of the relationship between faith and culture, and that faith must become culture.
According to the Vatican's official text, the catechesis is titled "The relationship between faith and culture" and covers paragraphs 53 to 62 of the Second Vatican Council's constitution Gaudium et Spes. The Pope described faith as "an incarnate reality" woven into the culture where it is lived.
He quoted John Paul II: a faith that does not become culture is a faith not fully accepted, not entirely thought out and not faithfully lived.
The Pope added that the constitution calls for education aimed at a "unity of knowledge", and that Christians are the first who must strive to bring about this unity of wisdom.
Background: The audience is part of Pope Leo's series on the documents of the Second Vatican Council. The Vatican's record shows the audience on Wednesday, October 21 covered "Commitment to the family in today's society" (paragraphs 47 to 52). ACW earlier reported on Pope Leo XIV's remarks on canon law.
Why it matters: According to Vatican News, the Pope said faith is present in every culture but identified with none, and shapes cultures from within through charity and service.
ACW will continue to follow this story.
