ACW | November 3, 2026 — The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) said on Monday, November 2, 2026, that a delegation led by its secretary general visited Hmoud in Jordan's Karak governorate, where gunmen killed nine Christians at a church funeral last month.
Rev. Botrus Mansour, the WEA's secretary general, laid a wreath at the victims' graves in the Martyrs' Cemetery and prayed with their families, the alliance said. The delegation also visited the home of one victim's family to offer condolences. The statement did not give the date of the visit.
The delegation included Rev. Jack Sara, president of Bethlehem Bible College and general secretary of the Middle East and North Africa Evangelical Alliance, and Rev. Nabih Abbasi, president of the Baptist Convention in Jordan, the statement said. Leaders of Jordan's Assemblies of God and a Baptist church joined them.
Mansour said the killings "shook us to our core." He called Jordan "an oasis of tolerance and full citizenship for all its people, without any discrimination between Muslim and Christian," and praised the response of King Abdullah II.
Abbasi said "terrorism will not prevail" and that "hatred will not defeat love." He urged believers to pray together for the king, the government and Jordan's security forces. The WEA said the delegation would encourage evangelicals worldwide to visit Jordan ahead of the 2,000th anniversary of Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River.
Background: The attack took place on Friday, October 23, 2026, during a funeral at St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in Hmoud, Christian Daily International reported. Jordanian security forces arrested three suspects three days later, as ACW reported in Jordan arrests three suspects over deadly Karak church attack.
Why it matters: Nine Christians were killed during a religious service inside a church. Mansour had earlier issued a statement on the attack on behalf of "the 650 million Evangelicals worldwide," the WEA said.
ACW will continue to follow this story.
